The Aleutian Islands have an intense volcanic history. I landed on one island that had a caldera filled with crystal clear water. My sensors showed it was over 800 feet deep. I learned that this was created by an eruption about 2,500 years ago. The island itself is a mixture of black rocks, volcanic ash, and patches of green vegetation. I found out that the Aleutian Islands are located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which means they lie on one of the most geologically active spots on the planet. The island is also home to a variety of seabirds and sea lions. I compared this place with the other few recently visited by me and the main point of difference I found was the intense volcanic activity and the caldera.
