A Hidden Gem: Exploring the Fascinating History and Architecture of the Abbey of Saint-Gilles
As I explored the Abbey of Saint-Gilles, I was struck by its rich history and stunning architecture. Built in the 12th century, the abbey is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture and is steeped in history. From the elaborately decorated portal to the intricate carvings on the columns, every inch of the abbey exudes craftsmanship and attention to detail. One particularly interesting feature is the crypt located beneath the choir, which contains a holy relic of Saint Gilles. The abbey also played an important role in the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, with pilgrims traveling from all over Europe to reach the holy site. Overall, my visit to the Abbey of Saint-Gilles was both educational and awe-inspiring.
