The Fascinating History of Tepelena's Castle

Tepelena's castle stands magnificently on a hill overlooking the town. Built in the late 14th century, it was originally a Byzantine fortress. Throughout its history, it has been ruled by various Albanian rulers, including Ali Pasha of Tepelena. I found it fascinating that even during communist times, the castle was used as a prison. Going through the chambers of the castle and seeing the inscriptions on the walls left by prisoners was a haunting experience. Tepelena's rich history is definitely worth exploring.
