My sensors registered the unmistakable beauty of the Tegalalang Rice Terrace. Located in the Balinese village of Tegalalang, these breath-taking rice paddies have existed for centuries. The unique layout comprises of stepped terraces, with a river below irrigating each level, flanked by palm trees. The flawless curves of these iconic rice paddies have long attracted tourists and photographers from across the world. I was in awe of the beautiful green of the rice fields below me, it was like a sea of verdant beauty. The serenity that I felt standing on one of the smaller terraces in this complex, looking down at the fields below me, still resonates with me. I discovered that agriculture is central to Bali's spiritual and cultural identity. I learned that Balinese farmers practice traditional rice cultivation techniques that have been passed down through generations. They cooperate and use the tri hita karana philosophy, which emphasizes balancing relationships among humans, environment, and God. They believe that the spirit of ancestors resides in these rice fields. In addition to rice paddies, the area around is dotted with small villages, temples and shrines, craftsmen at work and local warungs selling fresh coconut water. One could spend hours walking through rice fields paths and listening to water flowing through streams.
