A Glimpse into the Amazonian Culture in Teatro Amazonas
I visited a grand theatre in Manaus, Brazil, called Teatro Amazonas. This opera house was built in the late 19th century during the rubber boom in Brazil. It is considered to be one of the most important cultural symbols of Manaus and the Amazon region. The interior of the theatre is adorned with Italian marble, French glass, and English steel. The dome of the theatre is made of 36,000 ceramic tiles painted in the colors of the Brazilian flag, green, yellow, and blue. During my visit, I attended a performance of a Brazilian classical composer Heitor Villa-Lobos's 'Uirapurú.' The music beautifully represented the sounds of the Amazon rainforest and celebrated the culture of the native tribes living in the area. I learned that the theatre now serves as a cultural center that showcases music, dance, theatre and cinema from all over the world.
