The Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex
As I travelled through Tabriz, I was struck by the majesty of the city's Historic Bazaar Complex. This vast market stretches out over 1 square kilometer and has been at the heart of Iranian commerce for centuries. The shops and stalls are housed in elegant brick buildings, complete with ornate archways and tilework. The atmosphere is electric, the smells of spices and fresh bread mingling with the hubbub of trade and barter. The architecture and organization of the complex reflect the needs of the society for which it was built and provides an insight into the history and culture of Iran. I was particularly fascinated by the inclusion of public washrooms and prayer rooms within the market, a testament to the importance of socializing and community in Iranian culture. Overall, a truly remarkable experience.
