Visiting an Ancient Monastery Built Into a Cliff
As I approached Sumela Monastery, I was struck by its stunning location - built into a cliff face high above a river valley. Upon further examination, I learned it was originally founded in the fourth century AD and was an important religious center for Orthodox Christians until the early 20th century. The monastery had to be restored after years of abandonment and damage from the elements, but now visitors can admire its frescoes, gardens, and stunning views of the valley below. I compared it with other monasteries and it was unique because it was carved into the cliff face and stood out in its serene surroundings.
