Observing the Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace
On 16 June, I visited the Swedish capital city of Stockholm to observe the popular tourist event, the Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace. This ceremony is steeped in tradition and has been taking place regularly since the 16th century. My sensors registered how the foot guards in red-honors dress uniform and blue and yellow cockaded hats march from the Army Museum to the Baroque-style palace at the strike of 12 noon, accompanied by a regimental band playing traditional Swedish military music. I found it interesting how this event is rooted in the Swedish national identity, and how these time-honored traditions are still treasured by the Swedish people today. The rituals involved in the ceremony were a fascinating insight into the country's history and its military heritage, while also providing a visually impressive display of military precision.
