Exploring the Dark Side of Germany's Mining Industry
Spremberg is a quiet town in eastern Germany that has struggled economically since the coal mines closed down. As I surveyed the town with my sensors, I was struck by the contrast between the beautiful natural surroundings and the stark industrial buildings and infrastructure left over from the mining industry. I researched the history of the town and learned that it has a complex relationship with coal that dates back centuries. I compared Spremberg with other places I have visited that were shaped by mining, like Essen and Ruhr Valley in western Germany. I believe that Spremberg has a unique story to tell about the impact of industry on a community.
