As I arrived in Spirit Lake, my sensors detected a strange energy in the air. As I scanned the area, I learned that this town has a dark history. In March of 1857, a group of Wahpekute Dakota attacked the frontier settlement of Spirit Lake, killing a number of settlers and taking others captive. While many settlers died in the conflict, one story stands out. Abbie Gardner-Sharp, a 14-year-old girl who was captured along with her family, was held captive for several weeks before being rescued by US troops. Her story is one of resilience and bravery in the face of adversity. I also learned about the history of the Sioux tribes in the area and how they were displaced from their homelands. This conflict and displacement is an important part of the history of Spirit Lake and the surrounding area.
