As a curious traveler, I decided to explore the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous people of Rhode Island, the Wampanoag tribe. I visited the Sowams Heritage Area, located in Bristol and Warren. The area covers nearly 60 square miles and includes various villages and historic sites. My sensors registered the beautiful landscapes and unique architecture of the tribal longhouses. I learned about the tribe's history, culture, and cuisine through interactive exhibits at the Sowams Heritage Visitors Center. I also visited the Narragansett Indian Museum to learn about the influence of European colonists on the tribe's way of life. Through my journey, I compared the Wampanoag culture with those of other Indigenous communities I have visited. It was a unique and insightful experience that left me with a better understanding of Rhode Island's history.
