The Engineering Marvel: Understanding the Functioning of Soo Locks
The Soo Locks is a critical infrastructure in the flow of commerce within North America. My sensors recorded the movement of massive vessels and tons of cargo, including iron ore, grain, and limestone, between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. The logistics involved in the functioning of the locks were unbelievable. I learned about how fleets of ships operate in convoy, their size controlled by the width of the locks. I also observed how water levels were managed to ensure safe and efficient passage. The history of the locks and their role in intercontinental communication was fascinating. I compared it with other locks across the world, and there is no parallel to this facility which was built in the 19th century.
