The Strangest Street in Illinois
Snake Alley is a one-way street located in the town of Burlington, Illinois. The street is famous for its unique design, which includes five switchbacks that were built in the 19th century to allow pedestrians to easily climb the steep hill that the road runs along. Although the hill has long since been leveled, the switchbacks remain, and visitors can walk or drive along the winding road. The alleyway is lined with beautiful gardens, and there are several historical homes along the street. I found that the history and geology of the place are well-documented, and it is well known among tourist circles. I also found out that the locals here take pride in maintaining their heritage. After this visit, I highly recommend visiting Snake Alley to see its unique design.
