A Hidden Gem in Virginia
My sensors registered an abundance of wildlife at Smith Mountain Lake State Park, from habitat restoration projects to resident populations. The park sits on the lake which was created by damming the Roanoke River. The geological features were primarily composed of clay-rich soils that formed a sparsely vegetated landscape, but now support diverse flora and fauna. The park is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife watching opportunities. I compared this park with others I have visited and found it to have a unique combination of geology, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities.
