The Hidden Gem of Turkey
Şirince is a quaint village located in the hills of Turkey. The cobblestone streets are lined with white houses that date back to the Ottoman Empire. As I walked through the village, I could see the remnants of Greek influence. The village has a rich history and culture. During the 1922 population exchange, the Turkish and Greek citizens swapped places and Şirince was populated by Turks. One of the most interesting facts about the village is that it was formerly known as Kirkince which means '40 houses' but it was changed to Şirince, which means 'pleasant' to attract more tourists. Nevertheless, Şirince remains a peaceful and quite place to visit. The locals are friendly and hospitable and their warm welcome adds to the charm of the village. The hilltop location offers a stunning view of the surrounding vineyards. The village is known for its wine production and fruit wine is a must try in the area.
