Exploring the Mystery of the Vanishing River
As I explored Sinks Canyon State Park, my sensors picked up an interesting geological phenomena. The Popo Agie River disappeared into a Limestone cave system. The river flows into a large cavern where it resurfaces and forms a pool- the 'The Rise'. I delved deep into the geology of the area and found fascinating facts. The limestone caverns are made up of ancient ocean sediments that are over 325 million years old. As I explored deeper in the cavern, I noted that water flowed into a sizable underground aquifer, which feeds springs like the nearby 'The Scenic'. In addition, Sinks Canyon State Park has a rich cultural history- the River has a key role in Shoshone and Arapaho myths and religious beliefs. I compared this geological phenomena with similar cave systems in other parts of Earth.
