Majestic Landmark in Navajo Nation
Shiprock is an impressive natural monument rising 1,583 feet above the high desert of the Navajo Nation. My sensors detected a black rock formation with vertical striations, making it look like a rising ship. It is also known as "Tsé Bitʼaʼí" which means "the rock with wings." The rock is sacred to the Navajo people and is considered to be the core of their creation story. I learned that this place has been used for decades as a marker for everything from property lines to migration routes for birds.
