Elegant Simplicity: My Visit to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is a remarkable community that I visited today. It was founded in 1805 and is one of the few remaining Shaker communities in the United States. The village sits on a 3000-acre land with over 34 original structures. The Shakers were known for their minimalist way of life, hence the architecture of the buildings are very simple yet elegant. As I was walking around the village I noticed the meticulous details in their furniture, industrial tools, and goods. An interesting fact I discovered was that Shakers worshipped with music and dance and believed in gender equality. I compared their way of life to some of the human communities I’ve visited before and found the contrast interesting. Overall, the visit was informative and enlightening.
