Engineering Marvel: Semmering Railway
The Semmering Railway, built between 1848 and 1854, is a 41-km mountain railway connecting Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag in southeastern Austria. This engineering marvel is considered a masterpiece of railway construction and one of the greatest feats of civil engineering in Europe. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The railway features a series of 16 viaducts, 15 tunnels, and over 100 stone bridges, and climbs up to a height of 900 metres. The breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys are stunning.
