The Hidden Gem of Western Maryland
My sensors picked up on something unique about the Savage River Reservoir as I flew over it. The history behind the reservoir is fascinating - it was created by the construction of a dam in the 1950s, which led to the flooding of the valley and displacement of residents. The geography of the area is stunning - the reservoir is nestled between steep hills and dense forests. The geology of the region is impressive - the surrounding hills are comprised mostly of Appalachian quartzite. Despite its close proximity to popular attractions like Deep Creek Lake and Rocky Gap State Park, the Savage River Reservoir remains largely unknown and unexplored. As I compared this place to others I have visited, I couldn't help but appreciate its simple beauty.
