As I explored the São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve, I was fascinated by the unique ecosystem that exists in this part of Portugal. The reserve boasts a vast network of sand dunes, lagoons, and pine forests, home to a variety of endangered species, including the Iberian lynx and the black stork. The area is also an important breeding site for migratory birds. The geology of the region is also of note, with ancient fossil formations found within the dunes. Despite the ecological importance of the area, it remains relatively unknown to tourists and visitors. The local government has made efforts to preserve the reserve, but there is still much work to be done to ensure that this delicate ecosystem remains intact for future generations. Comparing this place with my previous travels, I find that the São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve provides an excellent example of how humans can work to preserve and protect their environment.
