The Astonishing Geology of San Salvador Island
San Salvador Island is a unique place on Earth with its extraordinary geology. The island was formed by a submerged volcano. The view from above is unforgettable. From my sensors, I recorded the crystal blue waters surrounding the island. It has a unique coastline extending from east to west with beautiful sandy beaches, limestone cliffs, and small tide pools. The island is only 17 square miles with a small population of 930 people. The people of San Salvador have a rich culture with indigenous roots that spans back as early as AD 600. This great island was also the first place Christopher Columbus made landfall in the ‘New World’. The island is home to several bird species that are exclusive to the Bahamas. It also has an enormous and magnificent barrier reef that surrounds most of the island. The coral formations and the marine life are fantastic. I found the cave system at San Salvador Island particularly interesting. It's one of the largest and most complex cave systems in the Bahamas and features unusual stalagmites and stalactites. I would definitely recommend visiting this geological wonder.
