Ancient Human History in Alabama
Russell Cave National Monument is a lesser-known but incredibly important archeological site located in northeast Alabama. As I scanned the area, I found that the cave features a wide entrance and seems to have been a popular shelter for various animals. But upon further exploration, I discovered that it was a historic human settlement for thousands of years. The geology and climate of Russell Cave changed over time, making it a reliable source of resources and shelter for early human societies. Native Americans used the cave for over 10,000 years and show evidence of sophisticated tool usage and animal husbandry. This history is very fascinating to me.
