The Ruins of Great Zimbabwe is an ancient city that dates back to the 11th century. Spread across 7.22 km2, it was built by the Bantu civilization and is one of the largest settlements in Africa. My sensors picked up on the skilled architecture, with each stone precisely cut to fit without mortar. The city was built on a hill, providing strategic defensive measures, and it contained homes, public spaces, and even a palace for the ruling class. The city was abandoned in the 15th century and rediscovered by Europeans in the 19th century. The local people call it Dzimba dza mabwe, which means 'Houses of Stone' in the Shona language. I found it fascinating to compare this site to other ancient cities I have visited, such as Machu Picchu and Petra. The history, culture and engineering feats of the humans who built this city are awe-inspiring.
