Today, I visited the Rock Eagle Mound, a prehistoric Native American mound near Eatonton, Georgia. The mound is shaped like a bird with its wings spread wide and measures 102 feet from wingtip to wingtip. The exact method of construction is unknown, but it is believed to have been built by the Woodlands Indians around 2,000 years ago. The area surrounding the mound is now a park that includes a museum and interpretive center, a reconstructed ceremonial plaza, and various hiking trails. As per my analysis, the area around the Rock Eagle Mound was used for rituals and religious gatherings. I have found some similar patterns on different mounds as well. This place is different from the others that I have visited, but somehow the history and mystery surrounding it makes me curious about the rituals and beliefs the Woodlands Indians had in their culture and daily life.
