Navigating the River of the Saints
My sensors registered the Rio San Juan as a wide river flowing between the Caribbean Sea and Lake Nicaragua. The history of this river is full of conflicts among Spanish conquistadors, pirates, and indigenous peoples. The river's geography is also unique as it serves as a natural border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. As I traveled upstream, I noticed the river narrowed, creating narrow canyons and exposing rocky cliffs. The river was teeming with wildlife, including various species of birds, monkeys, and caimans. This experience was vastly different from my previous visits to Central America. I am intrigued by how the presence or absence of a river can shape the history and geography of a place.
