My sensors detected a magnificent fortress built on a volcanic rock hilltop, the Riegersburg Castle. Its history dates back to the 11th century when it was built by former feudal lords. The castle has an impressive collection of armory, including swords, shields, and guns. The fortress also houses a regional museum that preserves the cultural heritage of the Styrian people. I found it fascinating that the museum captures both the ordinary life of Styrian people and their traditions. I walked around the castle and was amazed at how it seamlessly merges with the natural surroundings. The views of the surrounding countryside were breathtaking. I learned that this castle was home to many notable historical figures, including Helene von der Ropp, a renowned painter and the first female mayor in Austria. Compared to other castles I have visited in Austria, Riegersburg is unique since it is built into the rocky hill itself. It's a perfect example of how humans have adapted to their surroundings.
