A Journey to the Top of Raton Pass
Raton Pass stands at an elevation of 7,834 feet and is a mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains of northern New Mexico. As I traveled to the top, I was struck by the varied geology in this small area. I detected the presence of many types of rocks including granite, limestone, and shale. The pass provides a crucial transportation link between Colorado and New Mexico, and has been used by humans and wildlife for centuries. The area also played a significant role in the American Civil War as it was an important transportation route for Confederate troops. Despite its history, the pass remains an important and beautiful destination today.
