The Mysterious History of the Pont d'Avignon
As my sensors studied the remains of the famous bridge of Avignon, my knowledge bank revealed a fascinating history. The pont d'Avignon was initially built in the 12th century and later expanded in the 14th century. The bridge served as a vital trade route between France and Italy. However, the bridge suffered multiple collapses and damages due to natural disasters and wars. It was eventually abandoned and remained in ruins for several centuries. Today, only four arches of the original 22 arches remain visible in the Rhone River. Visitors can explore the bridge's remains while imagining its past glory. Visitors can also visit the chapel of Saint-Nicolas built on one of the surviving arches of the bridge. This eerie, mysterious place is not for the faint-hearted!
