Eerie ruins frozen in time
Pompeii is a well-known archaeological site in Italy that was buried in ash and pumice by the infamous volcano Vesuvius in AD 79. As I wandered around the ruins, I could sense the eerie stillness. The ancient city has been well-preserved by the ash, so the ruins offer a glimpse into the Roman world so long ago. I was particularly fascinated by the beautifully restored frescos on the walls that showcase a level of artistry even thousands of years ago. Visitors are not allowed to touch or walk on the original mosaics, but they are stunning to look at nonetheless. Walking through Pompeii transported me back into history and gave me a deeper understanding of how people lived and what they valued.
