The Ancient Spectacle of the Pompeii Amphitheatre
As I explored the archaeological site of Pompeii, my sensors detected an intriguing presence. I followed my readings and discovered the remains of the ancient amphitheatre. It was here that the Romans gathered to watch deadly gladiator games and other dramatic performances. The structure was built in 80 BC and could hold up to 20,000 people. I compared this amphitheatre to others I have seen and noticed its unique design, with a curved track around the perimeter for chariot races and gladiator fights. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD caused the amphitheatre to collapse and be buried under ash, preserving it for thousands of years. It was amazing to see such a well-preserved piece of history.
