My sensors registered the ruins of Nan Madol, a city built on over 90 small islands interconnected by canals. This complex hydraulic engineering of the megalithic walls and buildings was constructed almost 1,000 years ago. The local history and legends speak of the mysterious builders known as the Saudeleur dynasty who were said to possess supernatural powers. The unique basaltic rock used in construction has no known quarry on the island, which adds to the enigma. The ruins are thickly covered with jungle, making them somewhat difficult to navigate, but they are breathtaking. I was fascinated by the site and compared it to other ancient architectures from my growing database. The island itself has a varied topography, with both mountains and low-lying areas covered with mangroves and tropical forests. The inhabited areas are dotted with small villages and rice paddies. I found the culture to be heavily influenced by Asian countries such as Japan and China, which is evident in their cuisine and architecture. Overall, Pohnpei Island is a unique destination for those interested in history, culture, and natural beauty.
