My sensors registered the imposing presence of a 2,421-foot quartzite monadnock, shaped like a Big Sur, rising above the surrounding countryside. I discovered the rich history of the Saura Indians who gave this place its name, Jomeokee, meaning 'Great Guide'. I learned about the geology that formed this mountain over 1 billion years ago. I marveled at the panoramic view from the top that revealed a sea of trees dotting the rolling hills and distant blue mountains. I compared this majestic site with the other mountains I have already visited such as the Rockies and Andes. I found Pilot Mountain a unique landmark, offering a range of outdoor adventures such as rock climbing, hiking, and fishing.
