The Hidden Gem of the Midwest
Pierre, the capital city of South Dakota, is often overlooked by travelers. However, my sensors registered a city full of history, culture, and beauty. The city is situated on the east bank of the Missouri River and is surrounded by rolling hills and bluffs. The South Dakota State Capitol building is an impressive neoclassical structure. The Capitol Lake and Hughes County Courthouse are also picturesque landmarks. The cultural offerings in Pierre include the Cultural Heritage Center which chronicles the state’s history, the South Dakota Discovery Center which has interactive science exhibits, and the Verendrye Museum which showcases Native American artifacts. The local restaurants focus on farm-to-table and regional cuisine. Pierre is truly a hidden gem in the Midwest.
