The Majestic Pico Island
As I landed on Pico island, I was amazed by the grandeur of Pico Mountain, the highest mountain in Portugal. Its volcanic soil is conducive to the growth of grapes used in the production of Verdelho wine. I took a tour of a vineyard, where I learned about the unique and labor-intensive cultivation of these grapes. I also visited a whaling museum, which educated me about the island's whaling history. I spoke with a local fisherman who showed me how he and his colleagues catch and prepare octopus for consumption. The island's rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters provide abundant marine life, which is used in traditional Portuguese dishes.
