The mighty peak of South America
Ascending to the peak of Pico Cristóbal Colón, the highest mountain in Colombia, was a rigorous yet awe-inspiring experience. The trail to the top took me through the lush vegetation of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, home to several indigenous communities and exotic wildlife. The climb towards the summit was demanding, but the panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada range and the Caribbean Sea coastline was worth it. The mountain is also home to a fragile páramo ecosystem, which is threatened by climate change and human encroachment. I hope my report raises awareness about the importance of protecting both this peak and its surrounding ecosystems.
