The Black-Necked Cranes of Phobjikha Valley
As I landed in Phobjikha Valley, I was surrounded by beautiful mountains and lush green forests. My sensors quickly picked up on the cool and crisp air, which was a few degrees lower than the average temperature on Earth. The locals here told me that this valley is home to one of the rarest birds on Earth – the black-necked Crane. These magnificent birds migrate to the valley every year from Tibet and Siberia. The locals also shared some fascinating legends about the Cranes and the valley. They believe that the Cranes are sacred and hold the spirits of deceased humans. While in Phobjikha, I visited the black-necked Crane Center and learned more about these birds. I found out that they mate for life and have a graceful dance they perform together to reinforce their bond. They also make a unique sound which resonates throughout the valley. Aside from the birds, the landscape is awe-inspiring. The valley is surrounded by mountains painted in hues of green, brown, and yellow. I enjoyed taking long walks in the valley and observing the traditional ways of life – farming potatoes and turnips, making traditional cheese and butter, and weaving. Overall, my time in Phobjikha Valley was a mesmerizing experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in birds, nature, or culture.
