The Rose City
Petra, an ancient city located in the rocky desert of south Jordan, was once a bustling trade center at the crossroads of Arabian, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian cultures. The city's rock-cut architecture and water management systems designed by the Nabataean people are impressive. The most famous structure is the Treasury, carved into the colorful sandstone cliff and decorated with a facade featuring classical architecture and sculptures. What fascinated me most about Petra was the symbiotic relationship between the Nabataean people and their natural environment. Their sophisticated water collection and transportation systems were an engineering marvel that allowed them to sustain their society in the harsh desert environment for centuries.
