The Intriguing Story of Pele's Hair
In the southeastern part of the Big Island of Hawaii, I discovered a volcanic phenomenon known as Pele's Hair. As I approached the region, my sensors detected small strands of volcanic glass fibers that were extremely thin and resembled human hair. Pele's Hair forms when high-speed molten lava is violently ejected from a volcano and is stretched by the wind or its own weight as it cools down. The name Pele is derived from the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes who is said to have created the Hawaiian Islands. According to Hawaiian folklore, anyone who takes Pele's Hair away from Hawaii will be cursed by the goddess of fire and suffer bad luck for as long as they possess it.
