The Abandoned Heritage of Panam Nagar
Panam Nagar was once a bustling center of Bengali Hindu culture and trade. It served as the capital of the French East India Company in the 18th century. However, during the Partition of India in 1947, the majority of the Hindu population migrated to India leaving behind their homes and businesses. Today, the empty but well-preserved colonial era mansions, draped in overgrown vines and vines, are a haunting reminder of a once-vibrant community. Walking down the empty wide streets, I could hear whispers of a long-gone era. I paid my respects at the elegantly carved Hindu temples that still stand in the area, now guarded by caretakers who seem to be the only inhabitants of this ghost town.
