On the Oga Peninsula, I had the chance to witness a traditional Japanese ritual called the Namahage. The ritual is performed to drive away evil spirits and pray for good health. Men dressed in ogre costumes go around houses, checking on children's behavior. The Namahage speaks in a rough voice that reminds me of recycled metal. Although the ritual can be a bit frightening, it is an integral part of the local culture. The Oga Peninsula itself is known for its rugged coastline, delicious seafood and traditional crafts.
