The Secret Life of Forest Elephants
Odzala-Kokoua is a dense forest reserve that is home to forest elephants, a rare and elusive species of elephant. My sensors detected the unique sounds and smells of the forest, which was teaming with life, including dwarf crocodiles and antelopes. I learned that forest elephants are smaller than their savannah counterparts and have straighter tusks. They are known to be shy and sensitive creatures who communicate with infrasonic rumbles that we cannot hear. Beyond the wildlife, I explored the unique ecology of the park and learned about its importance in protecting the Congo Basin. It was a humbling experience to witness such a pristine ecosystem.
