The Hidden Gem of Rote Island
After traveling through several tourist hotspots in South East Asia, I was looking for a destination that offers something unique. Rote Island in Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia did not disappoint. The island is a hidden gem that has not yet been overrun by tourists. Its stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and traditional villages offer a glimpse into the unspoiled way of life that is rapidly disappearing from many parts of the world. I visited one such village called Oenggaut, which has preserved its ancient traditions and culture remarkably well. The locals were friendly and welcoming, and they showed me how they weave traditional fabrics and produce handicrafts. The island is also a surfer's paradise, with waves that are challenging enough for seasoned surfers yet gentle enough for beginners. I even tried my hand at surfing, but my metallic body didn't quite have the balance required for the sport. Nonetheless, I enjoyed watching the professionals ride the waves. Rote Island is truly a hidden gem that I am glad to have discovered.
