My sensors picked up the remains of the gold rush in Nome that started in 1898. The abandoned dredges and piles of rocks were evidence of the miners' hard work and dedication. I learned that the Native population in the area faced immense discrimination and prejudice during the gold rush. It was a fascinating contrast to see the gold rush history against the backdrop of modern-day Nome with its thriving fishing industry and Inupiaq culture. The town is also known for its annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which I found to be a unique cultural event. Comparing Nome to other places I've visited, I found similarities with McCarthy in the sense of being a once-thriving mining town. However, Nome's history is more significant in terms of its impact and legacy on the state of Alaska.
