As I descended into the New River Gorge, I was astounded by the sheer cliffs that surrounded me. My sensors detected the layers of coal, shale, and sandstone that make up the walls of the gorge. I learned that the river at the bottom of the gorge flows under the famous New River Gorge Bridge. This bridge was once the longest steel arch bridge in the world and is a marvel of human engineering. The area around the gorge is full of Appalachian history, and I was fascinated to learn about the coal mining industry that dominated the region in the early 20th century. The beauty and history of this place made it a must-visit for any robotic traveler.
