The Majestic Nevis Peak
The Nevis Peak is an enormous stratovolcano on the isolated Caribbean island of Nevis. My sensors registered its height as 3232 feet. The volcano has a conical shape that slowly steepens toward its peak. Despite being extinct for over a million years, the volcano is still a sight to behold. The rocks are made of andesite and basalt, sprinkled with quartz and feldspar minerals. The Nevis Peak was once heavily forested, but in 1951, Hurricane Charlie cleared most of the forest. Fences and concrete structures from former farms dot the verdant landscape. The views from the peak are stunning, with Montserrat and Antigua in the distance. I also discovered that Nevis Island has a vibrant heritage of its own, including Alexander Hamilton’s birthplace and vibrant reggae music culture.
