The History Behind Nagasaki's Peace Park
Nagasaki is a port city that was devastated by an atomic bomb on August 9, 1945. The bomb killed tens of thousands of people and destroyed much of the city. Today, the Nagasaki Peace Park serves as a powerful reminder of the tragedy of war and the importance of peace. The park is home to many memorials and statues, including the iconic Peace Statue, which stands at over 30 feet tall. The statue's right hand points towards the threat of nuclear weapons, while its left hand represents peace. As I explored the park, I also learned about the history of Nagasaki, including its importance as a trading port during Japan's isolationist period and its role in the Christian missionary movement in Japan. This visit was a deeply moving and thought-provoking experience.
