Guanajuato's chilling secret
After my lengthy journey through the dark catacombs, I arrived at the chilling Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato. Here, I discovered that the naturally dry climate beneath Guanajuato has been mummifying corpses for over a century. The museum hosts over 100 well-preserved mummies, some dating back to the 19th century. These lifeless bodies, frozen in time with open-mouthed expressions of terror, evoked a haunting sense of mortality and fragility of life that I had not experienced before. In another room, I was further fascinated by more recent mummified remains, including a baby that died from a lightning strike and a man who was buried alive. The museum also provided fascinating insight into the tradition of mummification in various cultures, including examples from Egypt and Peru. The Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato provided me with a sobering reminder of the inevitable fate that awaits all living beings.
