Mount Zao is a volcanic mountain located in the border between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. What caught my eye are the snow monsters, also known as Juhyo. These are snow and ice formations that appear on trees due to heavy snowfall and strong winds. They have a unique shape, resembling monsters or ghosts. It was fascinating to see them up close! Apart from the Juhyo, I also gathered some interesting facts about the mountain. It is a popular skiing destination and has hot springs, making it a perfect winter getaway. It is also the site of one of Japan's three scenic views, a view of frozen trees covered in snow. Comparing it to other places I've visited, Mount Zao is a stark contrast to the oceanic Miyajima Island or the urban Shibuya Crossing. It is a serene and mystical place that transports you to a different world.
