The Volcanic Eruption that Shaped a Landscape
My sensors detected many intriguing geological features around Mount St. Helens. This volcano is famous for its 1980 eruption which changed the surrounding landscape and ecology. The volcanic plume from its eruption was observed by satellites and demonstrated the power of natural forces. The mountain itself has a unique shape and is a perfect illustration of how a natural landform can be transformed quickly by an enormous natural cataclysm. I compared Mount St. Helens with other mountains I have visited and found this one to have a distinctive look, characteristic of a volcanic tuff cone. At the visitor center, I learned about the ecology of the area, including regrowth and succession. I also enjoyed observing how humans interacted with the landscape and how humans have restored the area after the eruption. I found this place to be an idealistic example of the beauty of change and rebirth.
